Aloha! Tips for Flying with an Infant

In today’s blog post I would like to share some advice on traveling with infants and children. Ive’ received so many requests on this topic (ever since I documented our flight to Hawaii on my Instagram stories) that I decided that it might be a good idea to share some of my experience with you all.

Aloha is being a part of all, and all being part of me. When there is pain—it is my pain. When there is joy—it is also mine. I respect all that is as part of the Creator and part of me. I will not willfully harm anyone or anything. When food is needed I will take only my need and explain why it is being taken. The earth, the sky, the sea are mine to care for, and to protect. This is Hawaiian, this is Aloha”. – via Huna.org

So, what’s my take on this? It’s simple:

Don’t stress over the thought of flying with an infant or toddler! Starting at 3-months-old with Kingston and 7-months-old with Jaxson, my husband and I have flown with my children at every age and stage. Kingston has seen most of the world already and he’s only 6 years old. My husband and I believe in the concept ” to smell foreign air”—there’s so much beauty in this world that needs to be discovered and experienced.

But let me tell you: Flying with an infant means one thing for mom and dad… YOU’RE BUSY. Forget about reading a book on the plane (something I used to do!) or taking a nap—you’re going to be on mom/dad mode, yep, pretty much the entire flight. Feeding them, changing diapers, swinging them to sleep, you name it. And yet I find it so rewarding and fun to travel with my kids despite the exhaustion at times. It’s an adventure and I hope both of my boys will always remember our travels together.

Useful tips

Over the years I’ve become a master of packing. Change of clothes are a must for baby and you, as well as plastic bags to put them in. My carry-on is stacked with diapers, formula + bottles and solids (since we started Jax on solids almost two months ago!), as well as snacks for Kingston, of course. Personally I prefer traveling with a can of formula powder (easier going through security as well) and mixing with bottled water once you’re at the gate. Also, we always make sure that we feed Jaxson milk at takeoff and at landing (it helps with their ears). Toys aren’t really needed for Jaxson (he’s just as happy to play with his seat belt!) but Kingston, on the other hand, needs his IPad. ๐Ÿ˜‰ One thing I strongly recommend is getting your baby used to room temperature bottles and food, so you don’t have the additional hassle of heating en route. Further, we always bring a sling or cloth carrier with us! Jaxson loves to be held and carried so, if he gets fussy we’ll typically take him on a quick walk – it’s a great distraction for you and baby. And last but not least: Always remember how easy infants are to distract and comfort. ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, thanks much for reading & have a great week!

These are good tips, thanks for sharing! Beautiful photos too! ๐Ÿ™‚

I did a post recently about travelling with toddlers – while mine are too big for breastfeeding I made sure to pack lots of snacks and they had their water bottles as you’re right it really helps their ears! ๐Ÿ™‚ I enjoyed their first flight, although I was busy as you said, so much that I’m wondering where to take them next!

Hope you are having a lovely week, and you got some bargains in the sales. I ended up grabbing a little something on Cyber Monday after resisting temptation all weekend, haha!

Great tips! I don’t know how people do it LOL seems hard and a lot of work! I guess it’s part of being a parent, a 24/7 job ๐Ÿ™‚
I think you’re so right about just diving in and don’t stop traveling when you have kids, yeah it’s hard but I think the reward is worth it. Your kids are so lucky because they get to see the world from such a young age. It’s so important to see and experience other cultures ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks for sharing V! These pics are amazing!

I don’t have kids of my own so I can’t imagine how much planning would be involved to travel half way across the globe. I have friends with children and trying to organise lunch dates or shopping met ups is quite the feat for them hahaha!

Thank you for your tips, Vanessa. I have to say, from my own experience, that it is much easier to fly with an infant than a toddler. :-))

How precious is Jaxson?! He’s getting so big; I can’t believe Aviah will be 5mths tomorrow. It’s crazy how fast they grow. Anyway, these are all such great tips. I haven’t yet traveled with Aviah, so this gives me some mental prep before I do. Thanks for sharing, my friend. Btw, that opening definition of Aloha is absolutely beautiful!
