Must-Have Editing Apps for Instagram

Who isn’t obsessed with a cohesive Instagram feed?! During my 4 years of blogging I’ve learned quite a bit about photography and yet the biggest lesson I’ve taken to heart is this: Editing is everything. Seriously. You can take pictures at random places, on a not so pleasant street and still have it be your picture of the year, with the right editing, of course!

If you have been following me for a while you have probably noticed the changes on my Instagram feed, as well as on my blog. My pictures are now brighter and a lot warmer.  During the winter my pictures had a rose gold tone to them (check this picture out for reference) and now that it’s warmer out I’ve decided to create a new preset on Lightroom and change the theme on my feed completely.

Lightroom

I LOVE Lightroom. I’ve purchased it 2.5 years ago and learned how to use it via Youtube and years of practice. It may look intimating in the beginning but trust me—it’s really easy to use! But let’s get to the fun part. To achieve this ‘warm’ preset you’ll have to make sure that your temperature is really warm. In Lightroom this would be your very first window in the “Develop” section. I have mine on + 41 (which is on the warm, i.e. yellow side) and only move the tint to a -1. I also bump up the exposure since I want my images to appear bright and warm. However, to do so you need to make sure to shoot underexposed otherwise your images will be extremely bright. But remember every picture is different so you will always need to adjust your overall exposure. Next up is Hue which I also adjust. You can see your primary colors listed and in the yellow tab adjusted it to +4.  And last but not least I love a little grain in my pictures hence my setting on the grain is around 17. Once done in Lightroom I will then airdrop to my iPhone and use the following apps to get the final look!

VSCO

I’ve been using VSCO for the last 2 years. It’s an awesome app if you do not want to create your own presets. Their filters are pretty amazing. My favorite to this day is A4. You can also adjust exposure, contrast, etc. and add grain if you want to do so.

Afterlight

Afterlight is a great app if you want to add something ‘extra’ to your photos, like the light beam I added in the example picture or if you want to create a vintage vibe to your photography by adding a ‘dusty’ film to them. It’s truly fun since you can get really creative with it!

What are your favorite Instagram editing apps?!

    Hey Vanessa,

Can you get these apps on your phone? I like using Snapseed to edit my Insta pics. What app can I get to help me with planning my Insta feed and seeing how it will look?

Love your edits! I personally prefer a less edited photo, but I know that’s not currently in vogue! haha You look beautiful in both the photos, before and after! Love your picnic pieces!

I love using Lightroom and VSCO. I was the same and totally was intimidated by Lightroom at first. Now it is the best photography tool to use! I need to checkout Afterlight!

Thanks for sharing your favourite apps! I use VSCO (when I remember!), but couldn’t really get on with Lightroom! I’m still trying to get a cohesive Instagram feed so I think maybe I need to start watching you-tube videos!

I use Lightroom. I had a custom made filter made a few months ago that I love! If I take a picture on my phone I just use the Lightroom app with my filter. Will need to check these other ones!

VSCO is my go to editing app as well. I haven’t used Lightroom too much, as I use Photoshop, but I learned to use that through YouTube so I’ll have to give Lightroom a try too! Have a wonderful week ahead, Vanessa!

It’s so interesting seeing the photos side by side! ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to get better at editing my photos, I throw an instagram filter on and that’s it, ha! I have heard a lot of good things about VSCO though.

Hope that you had a wonderful weekend ๐Ÿ™‚ We had a birthday party for my eldest so it was a bit busy, but lots of fun.
