How To Master Creative Night Photography

One of my goals this year is to bring my photography to the next level. I don’t want to solely focus on my clothing anymore but rather let me images speak, i.e. tell you a story. I want them to inspire you but more importantly convey a mood and/or emotion. Over the holidays my husband and I invested in a new DSLR camera and I studied new skills, one of them being “creative night photography”.

Explore The Unknown

My husband and I have never done a night photo shoot. This was definitely a new territory. But let me tell you: Night photography is a great equalizer. Shooting in the dark it like working on a blank canvas. This year I want to explore a whole lot more. I want to explore the unknown world of photography because it truly excites me.

Night Photography Settings

But let’s get to the most important part…night photography settings. If you own a DSLR camera and are interested to shoot at night as well, keep on reading!

Exposure, exposure…

There are three (3) factors that affect your exposure: Shutter speed, aperture and ISO, which you’ll use differently at night. The first thing to do is take your camera out of auto mode and set it to manual mode. This way, you’ll have full control over all of these settings.

Shooting at night means that you will need to change your settings on your DSLR camera. You need to widen your  aperture, slow your shutter speed and/or raise your ISO. However, don’t raise your ISO all the way up because this will make your images grainy.

Location, location…

I knew I wanted to shoot by a store that had neon lights and we got lucky! We found a near pizza joint that had several windows with bright lights (the window I am standing next had a bright red “Open” sign). The lighting coming from the windows were perfect (they automatically provided creative colors within my images).

And last but not least it’s all about editing. I mainly use Lightroom to adjust contrast, vibrancy and saturation. Editing can make your images pop even more.

Have you tried night photography or do you have any additional questions?! If so, comment below! As always, thanks much for stopping by and have a fabulous Monday!

I’ve never tried full night photography, but I did try shooting in low light and the results were terrible. I love how your photos came out though. So artistic and unique.

These photos are gorgeous – my Husband and I did long distance for years when we were first together, it’s rough, but well worth it when you’re with the right person. Mind yourselves!!
