Over the weekend I ran my first 10K race in Deer Park. It was an absolute incredible experience even though the weather was extremely cold. I ran in negative degree weather and it was really windy – but I persevered.
Running my first 10K happened 3 months after I ran my first 5K. I’ve officially started running back in September of 2022 after embarking on my fitness journey. And here we are, six months later. I’ve developed a real love and passion for the sport. Initially I started running as a way of escaping from stress but than I discovered the competitive side of it as well. Running gives me the ability to push myself. I’ve always loved to work hard (hello, fellow “Type-A” personalities!) but this time I’m working hard on myself to become the best version of myself.
Running has shown me that determination, hard work, consistency and passion will get you far. This year I’ve signed up for 5 races total, including the Chicago Half Marathon in June. Some people think I’ve gone mad. They don’t understand, or perhaps they’re jealous of my commitment, whatever it is, I’ve learned to tune out the negative energy out of my life. A lot of people crave change but do nothing. I say: BE THE CHANGE. I’ve craved change for so long as well until I decided to BE THE CHANGE.
Failure is inevitable but it’s learning from your mistakes. It’s about getting back up and moving on. This makes for a good runner, or a better person for that matter. Evaluate and take responsibility for your actions. When times are tough keep the hope alive and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
If you have a passion for something you will make it work. I became a runner and mother despite the hard things life has thrown at me and I know running has opened up the path to my purpose. We all have busy lives but let me tell you: Exercise is a huge mood booster and probably the best anti depressant around.
There’s something deeply meditative about running. Anyone who has experienced the feeling of being “in the zone” while on a run will attest to the profound stillness and clarity of mind that can be achieved through the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and repeating, ad infinitum.
If you’re interested to start running I recommend starting small. Lace up and aim for a slow pace and short distance. Don’t wear yourself out right away – and don’t forget to never give up. You won’t be able to run 10 miles right away but if you stay committed and persistent, you will.
I’m so proud of you!
