How to start a successful blog in 2018

How-to-start-a-successful-blog-in-2018s-vanessa-lambert-what-would-v-wear-famous-blogger

One of the many questions I have receive on an almost daily basis is how to start a successful blog. It seems many want to know the secret on how to create a blog that pleases readers, attracts traffic and brings in the money you need to make it a profitable venture. Today I’m excited to share how I  created a successful blog, and build a full-time business.

It was 4 years ago when I decided that I wanted to give blogging another chance—I wanted to share my personal style and be an inspiration to others around the world. So I went online and quickly set one up, hoping it would grow to what it is now. Just two weeks later one of my posts, i.e. looks was featured on New York Magazine “The Cut”, with tens of thousands of readers pouring in within just a few days. I was baffled and surprised but it was then when I understood the power of social media and blogging. This particular experience gave me such a boost that I decided to give blogging my all—hoping it would become my full-time business.

How do I create a successful blog or website?

1. Find a good name and domain name.

Your domain name is what you type into the address bar to go to a website. I came up with the name What Would V Wear® since a lot of people on the streets would literally ask me what/who I was wearing. Back then my husband and I lived in the city and I kid you not, people would often stop me to ask about my outfits. And just like that What Would V Wear was born.

2. Get web hosting.

I’ve done my fair share of mistakes with web hosting. This one is so important, once you have your own name you need to go and register it online. I switched to a more expensive web hosting company (and more reliable) over 2 years ago and it was the best decision ever! Since then I never had to deal with my site being unavailable (my old hosting company was very unreliable!). So, be wise and choose good.

3. Find a good theme layout for your website.

During my 4 years of blogging I’ve had 3 different themes. You want to keep your blog current hence I recommend adjusting/changing your theme every few years. As you grow, so will your readers. You need to stay fresh and updated as needed. My current theme/layout is super easy to navigate and I’m currently working on a photography page as well since I will be expanding my business into photography. Stay tuned for more information on that.

4. Start creating the content you are passionate about and share it with the world.

Obviously my passion is fashion. To me, fashion isn’t just about clothes. It’s an expression of who you are. It’s art. I don’t just put something on—my looks oftentimes tell a story and if you really look and examine you’ll be able to tell. I encourage you to do that sometime. Clothes tell you so much about the wearer and much more. However, my website isn’t just about fashion. I love my family and hence they are sometimes featured on here, as well as interior design, and so forth.

5….and last but not least: Use the power of social media.

If you really want to take your blog to the next level you must also be active on social media. Most of my readers come straight from my Instagram page. You can track the “clicks” if you use Bitly links or if you have a business Instagram account you can track via the Insights tab as well.

As always, thanks so much for reading & have a great day!

These are some really great tips to get started with a blog, girlie! It’s become so saturated, nearly everyone seems to have a blog or is interested in starting one these days. With so many people around the world, though, there’s room for everyone to inspire and be inspired, but getting started and the overwhelming questions on what to do first is what holds many back. I think the name is the most important, as you’ve mentioned. It’s what will stick with people when they may even forget your name (mine is a bit of a hard one to remember, lol). It also lets your potential readers know what to expect and what your blog is about. Thanks for sharing these tips, my friend, and I hope you’re having a great week!

I definietely agree with all your tips. I’m quite happy with my theme however if I want to change anything it requires knowing the html coding. I have asked a few bloggers as to how they have done this or that and it seems like a lot of is have been using developers to deisgn their webistes. Maybe this is where I need to improve as I do everything myself including coding that I’m not so good at. xx
